I have been keeping bees for over ten years. I’ve had my good years and bad. I have tried many things to treat for the varroa mites. We all know that varroa mites vector in most of the diseases of the hive. I believe if you can control your mites you can save your bees. In May my local bee club hosted Lynn Williams from Bee Hive Thermal Industries. He did a presentation of The Mighty Mite Killer. He has thoroughly researched his product. It treats the hive by heating it to a temperature fatal to the mites. This does not harm or upset the bees. I came home and told my wife it sounded like a silver bullet and I wanted to give it a try, so I ordered one. I had checked most of my hives earlier in the year and got an average count of ten to fifteen mites per three hundred bees with a sugar shake check. I treated with the Mighty Mite Killer and was amazed to see dead mites on the heating tray right after treatment. . Lynn said that this would kill mites in the cell with developing larva, so mites would fall for about two weeks. I came back about two weeks later and did another sugar shake. This time I got less than five mites per three hundred bees. During treatment I expected the bees to get a bit agitated, but they did not. They were very calm during and after the treatment. Unlike chemicals, mites can’t get resistant to this and there is no contamination of the wax or honey. Like other treatments you treat three times a year, but with no recurring costs and it’s easy on you and the bees. I believe it might be the silver bullet.
